    London

Try not to laugh out loud as London’s landmarks pop up unannounced. St. Paul’s. Buckingham. Trafalgar. Race past Big Ben atop a double-decker. To do a short stay justice, you’ll want to walk quickly and sleep little. Expensive but worth every penny, London really is the world’s coolest city.

    Paris

Paris, day 1. Swallow your pride and take the photo. Y’know, the one where you conspire with perspective to hold the Eiffel Tower in your hand. Once that’s done - vite, vite. Paris awaits.

While the Louvre is hardly optional, lesser-known museums, galleries and historic sites deserve unhurried visits. Notre Dame is always dramatic and the Seine totally romantic.

    Florence & Rome

Italy rewards visitors with great hospitality, endless art, history and vino. You’ll trip over landmarks with little effort in Florence and Rome: the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain and Uffizi galleries, for starters. Yep, Italy’s pretty much drowning in UNESCO World Heritage Sites - it’s got more than any other country. Need a break or a beer? Welcome to the land of siesta. Andiamo - let’s go.

    Around Greece

Taste-test your way around this small country, finding new landscapes, different architecture, and specialty foods on every island. A great ferry system allows for total choose-your-own-adventure, whether nightlife on Mykonos or fresh calamari on quieter Naxos.

Over 200 inhabited islands. No matter where, Greek hospitality is legendary. Stay after-hours at any establishment to find yourself toasting with the owner, healthy measures of ouzo all round.

    Munich

Want beer, wurst and maybe more beer? For life’s basics done right, head to Germany’s south. Home to Oktoberfest, Munich is a pedestrian and cyclist’s city. Enjoy centuries-old architecture while seeking out a brauhaus all your own. Surrounding Bavaria and the nearby Alps make a long list of day-trippable options - Neuchwanstein, the fairy-tale castle of postcards, is totally worth the trip.

    Barcelona

An ancient port city, Barcelona’s salty in places - but always sweet. It’s perfect for exploring on foot, while in search of the perfect sangria.

    Madrid

In capital Madrid, try the golden museum triangle, where the Museo del Prado and co. are awash in arty-awesomeness. Goya, Rubens, Caravaggio - the gang’s all here.

After a lively football match, it’s time for flamenco. Madrid at night is for dancing and drinking, rarely - if ever - for sleeping.

    Amsterdam

Get your culture fix at great museums - Van Gogh and Rijksmusem are musts, the sex museum eye-opening. Pay heed to historic memory at the Anne Frank House. It’s just a an hour’s train to Den Haag, home of the International Criminal Court.

A canal ride makes sense of Amsterdam’s jumbled, often wonky, layout. Sweet shopping and nightlife round out a great visit.

Also worth mentioning - Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Budapest, Prague & Istanbul

More and more, Eastern Europe’s getting rightful recognition. Experience it your way before it becomes a mass-market hot-spot.

In Croatia, check out oldy-worldy Dubrovnik and capital city Zagreb, an addictive mix of now and then. Gorgeous, too, are Budapest and Prague. Istanbul should make your list as well, for its genuine people, stunning views and unending supply of Turkish Delight.
