    Anna Hejczyk :

Abstract: The article provides an historical narrative of the creation and the fate of the 2nd Polish Corps, which had its beginnings in the form of the Polish Army in the USSR that was set up in 1941, in the wake of the Sikorski-Majsky agreement. It provides an account of how Polish people, who were forcibly deported to the Soviet Union, became soldiers of the Polish Army in the USSR as a result of changes in the political circumstances of the day, and it outlines the situation in which they decided in favour of evacuation to Iran. The article then traces their journey through the Middle East and the battles of the Italian campaign of World War II, to conclude by a discussion of what awaited the soldiers - heroes of the Battle of Monte Cassino and other major combat engagements - in the wake of the conflict.

Keywords: Poland, government-in-exile, 2nd Polish Corps, Anders Army, Soviet Union, World War II.
